DescriptionView looking east on State Street at Market Street and American Row. The Connecticut River is in flood from Lower State Street to the East Hartford Shore in the background. On the left side is the Hartford Covered Bridge and a steamboat directly below the bridge. Businesses include Calhoun Steam Printing at 26 State Street, the Connecticut Union and the Republican Office, all in the same building. The large building on the left side of the intersection is the Mercantile Bank on Market Street. On American Row is the American Hotel, with a cupola on the top and porches facing the street. On the first floor of the hotel building is A.M. Gordon, tailor, of the American Clothing Store and S.C. Preston, physician and surgeon. On the second floor above, is C.C. Osborn, Charter Oak Drug Store. Directly to the right is the American Hall. The second floor of this building is shared by the Hartford Savings Bank and Building Association, Rice, sign painter, and the Religious Herald. The first floor is shared by R.R. Phelps, grocer, Jacob Naedle, boot maker, and the American Restaurant.
