[The notes written in pen on verso are in Lou’s handwriting; the pencil notes are not.]NotesLou Frink depicts Rufus Rood's blacksmith shop from memory as it looked like after the 1888 snow storm. Also known as "The Great White Hurricane" or "The Blizzard of 1888," that snow storm started on the evening of March 11th and lasted until March 14th, reaching a total of 58 inches of snow. Although Frink paints this from memory, the date recorded on the back of the drawing is three days earlier than the storm began.

The blacksmith shop and/or Rufus Rood the blacksmith, are depicted in several other Frink drawings such as 1973.25.19; 1973.25.40; 1973.25.41; 1973.25.42; 1973.25.64; 1973.25.86.
