Oliver was interviewed as part of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History's Community History Project discussing moments of change in his life.
Oliver spoke in-depth about enjoying movies and the significant moment of his life, when he watched the movie “American History X”. The experience of watching that movie left a lasting impression on him. Its cinematic art form and powerful themes had a very significant impact on him.
Prior to watching this movie, Oliver was aware of the race issues present within society, but this movie offered him a new perspective. He knew about this presence of hate, but not of its origins, which this movie also showed him. The message that Oliver took away from the movie is that matching hate with hate won't solve any kind of issue. He remembered having deep discussions with his father regarding racial issues. This movie has impacted his perspective on how he will approach the topics in his professional life. Oliver shared that after watching "American History X" he hopes to be more understanding and less judgmental of other people’s perspectives, which may differ from his perspectives.
