DescriptionTwo frigates are engaged in naval combat in a choppy sea. The ship at the left has lost a large portion of her masts and yards. Some of her sails and rigging are on the deck. Part of a sail and a tattered British flag hang over the side and dip into the water. A few small figures of men are on the platform on her mainmast and on deck. Fire and smoke issues from the cannons of the ship at the right, which flies an American flag. A small blue flag flies from the foremast. Small figures of sailors on a yardarm haul up one of the sails on the foremast. The sails of both ships have numerous holes in them. A dense cloud of smoke is between the two vessels.
