DescriptionAudio file of interview with Tyler Green. He was interviewed by Samantha Hass on 24 July 2025 in Winsted, Connectiuct.
Tyler Green was interviewed as part of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History's Community History Project discussing moments of change in his life.
During the interview, Tyler talked about his time on the Syfy television competition series, Face Off, and how it changed the course of his life. Tyler, a special effects makeup artist specializing in creature design, had always been a creative child. He recalls making models of characters out of random materials in his youth.
As he got older, that creativity persisted. Tyler ended up going to school for makeup and special effects after high school. After that, he worked in dentistry, making sure to continue his passion projects on the side. Once he applied to be on Face Off, a gameshow-like series in which special effects artists compete by designing the best monsters, he realized his dream of becoming a full-time artist was coming true.
While on the TV show, Tyler explains that he was faced with immense pressure; not only were the challenges difficult, but constantly being on camera was stressful. Despite these challenges, Tyler was able to create successful monster designs that he was proud of, such as the hypothetical rendition of the creature that eats Oompa-Loompas in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Tyler finds that his time on Face Off challenged him creatively and also emphasized the importance of time management, which is something that he tries to teach his students.
In addition to collaborating with filmmakers for various projects, Tyler now teaches courses at Whiting Mills. He is also the proud creator of Spooky Kitz, a product that allows users to follow tutorials and try their hand at applying special effects makeup. Tyler looks back fondly on his time on television and encourages aspiring artists to take that leap of faith if they want to achieve their dreams.
