DescriptionA young boy stands before a wooden cupboard door with a paintbrush in his right hand. He is wearing a cap or beret, a smock, pants, and boots. He holds a small pot, evidently containing paint or ink, in his left hand behind his back. He is drawing a caricature of an old man wearing eyeglasses and a stocking cap. At the left, behind the boy, stands an old man wearing eyeglasses and a stocking cap. He wears an apron over his coat and breeches. He has socks, apparently without toes, on his feet. He holds his glasses with his left hand and has his right hand drawn back, as if to slap the boy. He has a paintbrush in his mouth. Additional brushes are in a large pot in the lower left corner. Jars, apparently of paint, some with brushes in them, are in a wicker basket on the floor beside the cupboard. A stepstool is nearby. The wall in the background appears to be half-timbered.
