DescriptionJesus Christ, a bearded man wearing a loincloth and a crown of thorns, is nailed to a large cross. A halo surrounds his head. Blood streams from the nail holes in his hands and feet. Above his head is a sign that reads: "JNRJ". Three wooden wedges hold the cross in place. Two weeping women are on the left. The older woman, wearing a striped cloak and holding her veil to her face, is Jesus's mother, Mary. The younger woman, who wears a belted gown and sandals and hides her face in her hands, is Mary Magdalene. The young man standing at the right is the apostle John. He wears a printed robe, a cloak, and sandals. His hands are clasped as if in prayer. Dark storm clouds are in the sky. A bolt of lightning is at the left.
