DescriptionBlack and white postcard depicting Avenue Victor-Hugo in Cassis, France. There are many people, mostly men and boys, milling around in the street in the foreground. The street runs into the background away from the camera. There is a row of buildings on each side of it. On the left there is a shop awning that reads "TABACS". On the right is a large building with a sign that says "HOTEL LIAUTAUD" on the front and "HOTEL" on the side. There is a car parked in the street in front of the hotel.

A swim at the little / beach & a grand drive in a / big Renault car with private / chauffeur! Dinner at La Réserve / which is gorgeous setting [underlined] BUT / the Boulabaise [sic] no better than / il y a sept ans. We're now in / Grenoble which we think a / nice place & have discovered a / new wine "Hermitage" - very cheap & / excellent - It's just too bad about us!"

This postcard was sent to Russell Cheney. He was the youngest child of Kinght Dexter Cheney and Ednah Dow Smith. He had ten older siblings. Russell was an artist.

Mark note: The South Manchester postmark and oval cancellation mark were likely made by a "duplex canceler" which applied both marks at the same time.
