DescriptionA three-masted sailing vessel is at the left, and a whale is spouting at the right. A whaleboat manned by six men is approaching from the left. Four men man long oars; a fifth controls the rudder; a sixth stands in the prow holding a harpoon. Another whaleboat is in the water in the left foreground; a third is being lowered from the side of the ship. Three other boats are stowed near the stern of the ship. A man stands at the wheel. An American flag flies overhead. Smoke issues from the smokestack of the tryworks, in the forepart of the vessel. An anchor is slung from the bowsprint. Waves are breaking against the bow.
