John is wearing light colored clothing underneath a large, dark cloak that is draped around his shoulders. The cloak has a wide collar. He is also wearing a wide-brimmed hat. His hair and facial hair are white. He has a full moustache and a long, wiry beard. There is a tree in the background on the left and a house in the background on the right.

John Cheney was the son of George Cheney and Electa Woodbridge. He was a successful artist and engraver. Several of his brothers founded the Cheney Brothers silk business.
