InscribedTyped label affixed to verso: "The Charter of Connecticut granted by King Charles II / in 1662 was concealed in this tree to prevent / its seizure and annulment by Sir Edmonds Andras [sic]. / Charter government was resumed in 1689 and the charter / continued to serve as a constitution until 1818. / The tree fell in 1856."Handwritten in red ink: "This is made from the / "Charter Oak Tree" and / belonged to my grandfather / Ludlow Barker in Hartford."
