NotesProcess note: "John Stobart's painting, "A View of the City of Hartford arriving from New York," was researched completely through the mail and telephone conversations with Stephen Rice, the Society's Assistant Curator for Prints and Photographs. This case includes correspondence, thumbnail sketches and photocopies that help illustrate the process the artist and curator went through to arrive at a recreated scene.

Mr. Stobart initiated the process with a phone call to the Print Room staff. He had a rough idea of the image that he wanted to portray and already knew the approximate layout of State St. and the waterfront from research done for a Hartford scene he painted [in] 1980. He then sent several thumbnail sketches to aid in researching the specifics of the image.

Mr. Rice sent photocopies of photographs, prints and drawings from the archives to Mr. Stobart. From these, the artist made ever more detailed inquiries. The painting itself took a surprisingly short time to complete. The paint was hardly dry when it was reproduced as a limited edition of 950 prints. Fifty of those prints were countersigned by Governor Lowell P. Weicker, Jr, including this copy."
