Lib. / Old State H. first public bldg erected / from B[ulfinch]'s design / (Charles Bulfinch, Architect & Citizen / by Charles A. Place Houghton-M[ifflin] 1925 / Metr. M. / 'situated in St. House Sq. Hartf., on / the plot of land which was a part of / the first purchase made by the / English within the present bounds / of Conn., with unobstructed view / across the green to the river at / the east, The structure was a / commanding symbol of a / growing commonwealth. / balustrade added in 1815. The / cupola in 1822 'both doubtless / in the orig. design. It is stated / that it is copied copied from one on... / (Old State House (Hartford) [sic]"Verso, in pencil: "...the N.Y. City Hall, and though the lines are good they are not those / by B.---' 1st story 30 feet high / Portland (Conn.) freestone 3 ft. thick & the upper story, 30 ft. high, of / brick in Flemish bond 2 ft. thick / The struct[ure] is 50 x 120 fit. with east & w porticoes 40 ft. each / Figure on cupola now faces west / instead of e. as formerly. / 'colonnaded portico' at the east / letter of John Trumbull, painter / to Oliver Wolcott Esq. about / materials 'no evidence that B. / devoted any time to personal / supervision of the erection of the / building."
