DescriptionCivil War uniform waterproof forage cap. The cap is both machine-stitched and hand-stitched of a black, painted oil cloth. The cap is stiff and crushed, so the style of the cap cannot be determined. The cap has a painted oil cloth strap fastened with two leather buttons. The visor is made of painted oil cloth over cardboard and is edged with another piece of oil cloth that is machine stitched into place. The cap has an oil cloth sweatband, and it is lined in white plain-woven cotton muslin, which is now brown from soiling. No descernable maker's marks.
