NotesSubject Note: Ukrainians celebrate Constitution Day on June 28 to commemorate the adoption of its Constitution on this day in 1996, marking the independence of Ukraine from Russia. This event was an educational meeting to inform audiences about the revolution that took place in Ukraine over a disputed election in 2014. The Ukrainian National Home on Wethersfield Avenue in Hartford became the Ukrainian American Cultural Center of Connecticut in Cromwell, continuing as the cultural and community center of Ukrainian-Americans in the Greater Hartford area. The organization has served as an important community and cultural center and the home of several Ukrainian cultural organizations including scouts and a youth group, the Zolotyj Promin dance group, Yevshan and Lanka “Halychanka” choirs, a gift shop, and several festivals, performances, and events. From the event press release: "Ukrainian Cultural Fair/Fundraiser – June 29, 2014 1-6 PM Ukrainian National Home, Hartford
With Ukraine becoming a hot topic in the news over the past six months, people have finally realized the geopolitical importance of this Eastern European country, and have become interested in the events taking place. The story emerged out of Ukraine's capital Kyiv, inspiring millions throughout the world and reminded the Western nations of their own pasts. This was not the first time in history when ordinary citizens stood up against a corrupt government and succeeded in overthrowing it. However, it was the first time in recent European history when people armed with wooden shields, paving stones, and an unyielding determination to have a better future, managed to oust a powerful President backed by an even more powerful neighboring country (Russia). The story of the Ukrainian uprising holds similarities to a number of historical struggles including the American Revolutionary War, the French Revolution, as well as to India's fight for independence. The details of the recent events in Ukraine are both inspiring and sad. Some were covered by the news, others (while being featured on the European news) remained largely unknown to the American audience.
Greater Hartford’s Ukrainian community is eager to provide an in-depth story of what is taking place in Ukraine at a Cultural Fair/Fundraiser to be held on June 29th, 2014 at the Ukrainian National Home (961 Wethersfield Ave, Hartford) from 1 to 6 PM. The event is meant to serve several functions: educate the attendees on the recent events, introduce the audience to the culture of Ukraine (traditional and modern Arts and Crafts), as well as to give people an opportunity to talk to the local Ukrainians and get their opinions about what is happening in Ukraine. All the proceeds from the event will go to the families of the "Heavenly Hundred", for ordinary Ukrainian citizens who lost their lives in the recent demonstrations that ousted President Yanukovich."
