DescriptionA young man wearing a sailor's uniform is seated on a box or trunk on the deck of a ship. His uniform consists of long white trousers, low shoes, a short jacket, a shirt with a broad collar, and a tie. He holds a hat in his outstretched right hand. He has sideburns and a short beard. He leans his left elbow on a capstan. A cannon is at the left. A rope is at his feet. An American flag (with six-pointed stars) is behind him. In the left background, two three-masted sailing ships engage in battle.
