DescriptionWoman's bonnet, also known as a spoon bonnet. The bonnet is made of strips of straw or grass in a complex weave of flat fibers as the warp and plied fibers as the weft. These strips, 3/4-inch-wide, are stitched to multiple layers of net to form the distinctive spoon bonnet shape. A folded strip, creating scalloped edges, is stitched to the edge. The brim is 3 7/8 inches wide at the center top. Covered wire is used to shape the edge all around, and it is also stitched to the line delineating the brim from the crown. The brim area is lined with a loosely woven cotton pleated to fit and decorated underneath with five small bows of pink fabric.
