He attended Yale College and the Litchfield Law School and served as a Representative to the Connecticut General Assembly and as Secretary of the State. He was one of the charter members of the Connecticut Historical Society at its reorganization in 1839 and the author of many books. He died in New York City on 16 October 1868.
