DescriptionGirl's dress of black and red shot silk. The wide neckline is piped, and the bodice fabric is arranged in fan-shaped pleats from the center front waistband. The short sleeves are gathered into the piped armscye and into a narrow, self-fabric cuff. The full skirt is gathered into the 1 3/4-inch-wide waistband. A two-inch-wide tuck is stitched around the bottom of the skirt. The curved side back seams are simulated by applied strips of bias self-fabric with piping. The dress was altered in the early 1850s by making the neckline smaller (evidenced by cut piping and new shoulder seams). Also, the waist was lengthened. The bodice was made larger by moving the positions of the hooks and eyes at the sixteen-inch-long center back opening. The bodice is lined with plain, white cotton.
