DescriptionWoman's corset cover of white cotton, with a wide neckline constructed of rows of machine-made bobbin-type lace. The neckline is inserted with a peach-colored silk ribbon drawstring, and the edge is trimmed with a ruffle of scalloped lace. The corset cover is further decorated with insertions of lace laid in teardrop shapes across the bust area in front and between the shoulders in back; the centers are filled with self-fabric embroidered with floral sprigs. The center front opening extends for the length of the corset cover and fastens with four mother of pearl buttons. The armhole edges are trimmed with a scalloped lace ruffle; they also have the peach-colored ribbon woven in and out of lace just below the ruffle, and tying in bows at the shoulders. The fabric of the corset cover is gathered into machine-embroidered insertion at the waistline, which is again woven with the peach-colored silk ribbon, tying in a bow at the waist. The peplum below the waistline extends about 2 3/4 inches. The lace pieces are machine-sewn with a chainstitch, while the seams and hems are lockstitched.
Object number1974.50.909
Markings"34" is written, possibly in pencil, on the inside of the back. The center front opening along the inside proper left edge appears to have been marked in pencil with numbers, including "10" and "198", which are now smudged beyond recognition.
