He is wearing a broad-brimmed hat, a cloak, a short jacket, a vest, a shirt, breeches, hose, and slippers laced around his ankles. Medals and a watch hang around his neck; a watch chain and fob hang from his jacket. He has a beard and a mustache. The man is surrounded by trees, but an expansive landscape, with a town and hills in the distance, is visible in the right background. A tree stump is in the left foreground.
