DescriptionThe Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch, a brownstone war memorial consisting of two linked round towers and a bridge spanning the Park River, is at the left. The towers have round Romanesque arches and are topped by sculptures of angels. A frieze depicting marching soldiers and sailors surrounds the upper part of the monument. A panel with the coat-of-arms of the city of Hartford is in the center, surrounded by crenellations. A pointed Gothic arch spans the roadway. Globular light fixtures are on the bridge railings. Rail fences line the street. A gas street lamp is in the left foreground. Men, women, boys, and girls walk along paved sidewalks and in the street. A newsboy with newspapers beneath his arm runs toward the right. Two women sit in a carriage drawn by two horses. Another man rides a horse at a gallop at the right. Some women hold parasols. Some men hold walking sticks or canes. One man holds what appears to be a briefcase. The grassy lawns, trees, and dirt paths of Bushnell Park are visible beyond the monument. The Connecticut State Capitol, a large High Victorian Gothic building with a domed tower, is on a low hill in the right background. The corner of a brick building is visible above the trees in the left background.
