DescriptionA middle-aged woman is seated in the interior of a room, probably a parlor. She wears a dress trimmed with lace and ruffles over a lace blouse. Her jewelry includes bracelets and rings. She is seated on a hassock covered with a printed slipcover. Large cushions or pillows are behind her. A patterned carpet is on the floor and patterned wallpaper is on the wall. At the left, books, many with dust jackets or decorated trade bindings, are in glass-front bookcase. A vase and a candle in a candlestick are on the bookcase. A framed picture, an etching of cattle in a landscape, is on the wall above. At the right is a fireplace surrounded by ceramic tiles with an elaborate mantlepiece. A pitcher and additional candles and candlesticks are one the mantle.
