In the background is a two-story frame building with an addition at the right. A woman in a dark dress and three girls are on a porch at the right. The tree immediately behind the horse is leafless and possibly dead. Inscribed beneath image: "Old Phelps Tavern, Albany Turnpike, / west of Mountain Road."
