DescriptionA steamboat is shown heading towards the left, with smoke issuing from its smokestack and flames and smoke issuing from its superstructure. The name "LEXINGTON" appears above the paddlewheel. Passengers are on the deck and in the water. Some men and women are in the water holding onto planks or cotton bales. A lifeboat being lowered near the stern is upended in the water. A second lifeboat at left appears to be sinking.

NotesSubject Note: One of numerous depictions of the disaster. The Lexington was on her way from New York to Stonington, Connecticut when she caught fire and burned. Many Connecticut people were among the passengers.
