DescriptionA man, woman and child stand in the lower left; the child points to a man in a top hat sketching (probably a self-portrait of the artist). Two roads separate the onlookers from an open green in the center of Colchester. The large three-story building in the center is Bacon Academy, founded by Pierpont Bacon. Immediately to its right is the Congregational Church. To the right of the church, under a group of trees stands a small school for African American children. To the left of the Academy, there is a conference room and a small part of a tavern sign is visible.
