DescriptionWoman's "spoon" bonnet of brown and white silk gingham, trimmed with black and white lace and lavender silk ribbon. The brim of the bonnet flares up straight above the head, tapering to narrow sides along the face. From the side, the bonnet brim slopes back to the crown, which is round and flat and fitted closely to the head. The silk is gathered on wires and stiffened with buckram to form the shape. The curtain at the back of the neck (or bavolet) is a pleated flounce of the silk gingham, trimmed along the bottom edge with white net, stitched with loops of black velvet ribbon. A self-fabric rosette decorates the top of the brim. The inside of the brim flares above the face and is trimmed at the top with gatherings of black and white tulle and lace and a lavender silk ribbon bow. The tulle and lace edges a narrower lavender silk, which is pleated down the sides of the bonnet brim, ending in black silk ribbon ties. A narrow band of black silk is stitched along the inside edge of the brim where it joins the crown.
