DescriptionA two and one half story house has a double overhang and a striking eight panel door with crossed panels on the top and bottom. The doorway is framed by heavy plaster strips on either side, with a half circle pediment above it. There is a board fence to the left of the house and another house to the right. Another smaller fence, possibly a picket fence, runs in front of the house. A path, possibly paved with brick, runs through a grassy lawn beside a large tree.
Object number1964.8.9
InscribedOn recto, in pencil, "Farmington" "The Thomson House / 1772"; in black ink, "Farmington" "John & Thos. Thomson / were the first gunsmiths / in Conn. if not in N.E. / built this 1772" "The Thomson House"

On verso, in black ink, "The first saw mill in Conn. was built / in Farmington about 5 yrs after F was / first settled. It was 3 miles south."; in pencil, "Mrs. Henry Farnham / of New Haven was / born here" Other illegible pencil notes refer to the Porter House. Upper center, in pencil, "8-1964-9"
NotesDate Note: The drawing was not reproduced in Whitefield's book, Homes of our Forefathers (1882) but the paper is identical to that used for preliminary drawings for that book, so it appears likely that it was made at the same time. (Finlay 11/30/2013)
