NotesSubject Note: Eugenie Marie de Montijo became the Empress of the French after marrying Napoleon III in 1853. Eugenie was not his first choice for marriage, because she did not bring any political advantage or prestige to France. Napoleon III only married her after a more suitable match could not be found. Eugenie was Empress until 1870.
