Subject Note: Belle Mason Merrill may have been the wife of Henry C. Merrill of New Hartford, Connecticut. Census records list Merrill's wife's name as Mary, but Belle may have been a nickname. Merrill enlisted in the Union Army on August 13 1862 and mustered in on September 11 1862 as a private in the Second Connecticut Heavy Artillery. He was promoted to corporal on October 21 1864 and discharged on June 23 1865. (Ruocco, 04/21/12)
