He enlisted and was mustered into the First Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Heavy Artillery, Company I on May 23, 1861 as a Private. He was promoted to Corporal on February 1, 1863. He was discharged on May 22, 1864 because his time had expired. (Ruocco, 4/21/2012/)Newey gives his address as "New Boston, Conn." in an inscription on the mount. New Boston is a village in Thompson.
