Bowers of Hartford was mustered in as a Sergeant in the Sixteenth Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on February 4 1863. He was captured on April 20 1864 at the battle of Plymouth, North Carolina, when the entire Union force surrendered following an intense three-day siege.
