There are retouching marks in graphite on the subject's face and in the shadows created by his collar.Constituent Note: Louis Loeb was an American lithographer, illustrator and painter. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1866 and moved to New York in 1887. After studying art in Paris for several years, he returned to New York in 1892 and became an illustrator for Century Magazine. He also opened a studio in the city and exhibited his portraits and figure paintings until his death in Canterbury, New Hampshire, in 1909.
