At first a traditional agricultural fair, the event later included large fiberglass sculptures, stock car racing, and amusement park rides. Jacqueline Cochran (1906-1980) was a racing pilot and the first woman aviator to break the sound barrier. During World War II, she participated in the formation of the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps and the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). She later served as a consultant for NASA. (Finlay 6/20/2011)
