DescriptionA center-chimney colonial frame house with a beck ell is surrounded by a grassy lawn and stone walls. A screen door stands open at the right near a cellar hatchway and what may be a covered pump. Laundry hangs from a clothes line at the far left. A dirt road, a large tree, and what may be a mailbox are in the foreground.

MarkingsOn paper label affixed to paper backing, typed in black ink, "Samuel Russel Bristol's (1885-1956) tinted photograph / of his great grandfather, Hiel Bristol's (1803-1870) / house, Platts Mills, Nauguatuck, Conn. Hiel was a black / smith, whose shop was located a few hundred feet to the / East of his house. Born here were Hiel's and his first / wife, Anna Potter's (1808-1860) three sons, Beri Joseph 1827-1864, Bennet Jason, M.D. 1833-1903, and Ben- / jamin Hiel 1837-1922, father of Franklin Benjamin 1860- / 1904, and grandfather of Samuel Russell, Howard Hall, Carlton William and Franklin Benjamin, Jr. The photo / was probably taken c. 1910 when the house was rented / by Benjamin Hiel to the Rose family. Bertha Bristol / Tracy, Benjamin Hiel's and his first wife, Pauline Phelp's / (1840-1877) sixth and youngest child, gave it to Mrs. Rose whose daughter, Charlotte Rose Peck gave it to me, Howard Hall Jr., Hiel's great great grandson."InscribedOn verso, lower right, in pencil, accession number
