NotesSubject Note: Carolyn Aiken Welles graduated Smith College and went to India as a missionary in 1917 where she met and married Dr. Francis Duffy Ellis, Jr. They lived and worked there until 1929 when they returned to Connecticut. Their two children, Francis M. and Grace were born in India. Carolyn wrote a memoir of their years in India published in 1979. She died in 1993 at the age of 101. (Finlay 3/5/2014)
