Subject Note: Jonathan Brace, Jr. was born in Harwinton, Connecticut on 12 November 1754, the son of Jonathan Brace and Mary Messenger Brace. He graduated Yale College in 1779 and studied law under Honorable Oliver Ellsworth from Hartford, Connecticut. He was admitted to the bar at Bennington, Vermont, in November 1779 and began his practice in Paulet, Vermont. In 1782, Jonathan Brace moved his practice to Manchester, Vermont. He worked as the State Attorney for Bennington County from 1784 to 1785. In 1786, he returned to Glastonbury, Connecticut and was admitted to the Connecticut Bar in 1790. He moved to Hartford, Connecticut, in 1794 where he served as State Attorney, Judge of Probate, Congressman (1798-1800) and Senator (1819-1820). He also served as the Mayor of Hartford from 1815 to 1824. Jonathan Brace married Mrs. Anna White, widow of Thomas Kimberly from Glastonbury, Connecticut, while at Yale, New Haven, on 14 April 1778. They had two children: Fanny Brace Hall (1781-1826) and Thomas Kimberly Brace (1779-1860). Jonathan Brace, Jr. died in Hartford, Connecticut, on 26 August 1837, at the age of 83.
