DescriptionFamily register worked in dark blue, blue-green, dark and medium red, pink, yellow, white, medium brown, and light green silk threads in cross and satin stitches on a plain-woven linen ground. At the top of the register is a swag of flowers held up at the center and each end with a bow. Below this are thirteen lines of genealogical information relating to the Pendleton family. The information is split into three sections by two horizontal lines.
The ground has a selvedge at each edge and a double-turned, 1/8th inch hem at the top and bottom edges. The swag is created with satin stitches, which are sewn through the ground and an area of reinforcing plain-woven cotton applied to the back of the ground. Some very small areas of the swagged flowers use untwisted, or crinkled, silk threads.
Stitches: The principle stitch on the register is cross (over one); it also includes satin and flat stitches.
Condition: The register has a rectangular area outlined by wide thin rust stains from old staples (now removed). The register is heavily creased, especially up and down the center. The bottom center of the ground is in poor condition, with a significant area of loss, splits and staining. The ground has yellowed and darkened. The register is not framed.
