DescriptionGalvanized tin dustpan with a candleholder built into the handle. The handle is constucted so that the toe of one's shoe could be inserted from any of three directions to apply pressure to the dustpan. There is a paper label beneath the handle with instuctions on how to use the dustpan.

MarkingsA paper label beneath the handle reads in part, "[illegible]1882/ MONROE, CONN/ DIRECTIONS. / The foot can enter the socket/ at either side [or] at the back/ as [preferred]. [Press] gently until/ tin stop touches teh floor, and/ it is [illegible] to receive the/ sweepings. When not in use,/ [illegible] to the wall."
