DescriptionCast pewter half-gallon measure with a tapered lip, a baluster-shaped body, and a flared foot. The body of the measure is decorated with incised lines; there are a pair of lines on the lip, and three lines around the widest part of the body, and three just above the foot. The measure has an cast, ear-shaped handle. At the bottom of the handle, a short cylinder and a diamond-shaped plate attach it to the body of the measure; the handle is soldered onto the body. There are file marks on the handle. There are light scratches over the body of the measure, with additional deeper scratches at the widest points.

MarkingsThere are two marks on the lip of the measure, one on each side of the handle. To the left is "I. P. S." and to the right is "1827".

The underside of the measure has two marks: "N-YORK" inside a rectangle and "TB&Co" inside a rectangle with sawtooth edges.

NotesHistorical Note: The initials "I.P.S." stamped onto the lip of the measure belong to Joseph P. Simpson, the New York City sealer of weights and measures. (Hudson 3/15/2007)
