DescriptionRectangular box with carved decoration on the front that includes the date 1710 and the initials "AT", in the seventeenth century style. The top has canted, or slanted, edges on the front and sides, and overhangs the front and sides of the box. The front and each side of the box has a band of incised molding at both the top and bottom. The front is carved with two recessed diamonds with a textured background containing idetical raised scrolls and a three dimensionally carved flower. Between the diamonds is incised ".A.1710.T." over five vertical flutes with an incised line between each. At the top center front of the box, above the initials and date, is a square iron plate with a keyhole in the center. The front edges of the box have a vertical band of small gouges, or chip carving. The bottom overhangs the front and sides of the box slightly, and is canted at the front and sides. The top is joined to the box with a pair of iron strap hinges at the back edge.
Condition: The top is split into three separate sections; a pair of struts are nailed to the underside of the top to hold it in one piece. The front top left side of the box has completely broken off and been reattached. The upper left front corner has been repaired. The lower left front corner has split off from the box. The front edge of the top has a triangular indentation indicating that the box had a strap lock at one time. The present iron locking mechanism and iron strap hinges are a replacement. The back of the box has insect damage.
Design and Construction Details: The top is constructed of a single pine board (now split). The top is joined to the box with a pair of iron strap hinges at the back edge; the hinges are visible on the interior of the box only. A pair of wooden struts (later addition) are nailed to the underside of the lid. Each side of the box is constructed of a single oak board. The sides of the box fit into rabbets on each end of the front and the back boards of the box; these joints are nailed through the front and back corners of the box. The pine bottom of the box is constructed of two boards that are nailed to the underside of the front, sides and back of the box. The bottom overhangs the front and sides of the box.
