Biography: Richard Montgomery was born on 2 December 1738 in Swords, County Dublin, Ireland, the son of Thomas Montgomery and Mary (Franklin or Franklyn) Montgomery. He came to America about 1771 or 2, and married Janet Livingston on 24 July 1773. He was elected a member of the Provincial Congress in 1775. He was appointed in June 1775 the second in rank of the eight brigadier-generals and then made second in command of the expedition against Montreal. During a seige on Quebec, he was shot and killed on 31 December 1775.
