Thompson Harrington
American, 1803 - 1874
Biography: A note with information from Harrington's son indicates that Thompson Harrington was the son of Amos and Ruth Harrington, born North Brookfield, Massachusetts, 29 January 1803. He came to Hartford in 1823 to learn to make redware. In 1826, he went to work for Clark Williams, potters in Lyons, New York. He later bought Clark out and continued the business in his own name. He died in Lyons, New York, on 3 October 1874. According to Donald Blake Webster, Thompson Harrington was a stoneware potter in Hartford, Connecticut, between 1840 and 1852. Harrington moved to Athens, New York, where he managed, then owned a pottery between 1852 and 1872. Lura Woodside Watkins writes that Harrington was working in Hartford around 1825, but does not indicate beginning or end dates for his work in Hartford. While the fact that Harrington was in New York between the 1850s and 1870s is known, more research needs to be done into his working dates in Hartford.
