George Goodwin

Biography: George Goodwin was born 25 August 1878. He was descended from the early settlers of Hartford, and was the great grandson of George Goodwin, printer and publisher of the Hartford Courant from 1815-1836. George married Louise Dodge Goodwin (d. 1971), and they had a daughter, Mary Goodwin, and a son, George Goodwin Jr. George Goodwin was a lifelong resident of East Hartford, Connecticut and was very active in town affairs: he served on their first Town Council in 1929; helped organize the local Historical Society; served on the Fine Arts Commission from 1964-1969; headed the publication committee of a history of East Hartford; and was President of the Raymond Library Company. George worked for Aetna Insurance Company beginning in 1896, then for Connecticut General starting in 1912. He worked as Deputy State Insurance Commissioner from 1943-1949. George Goodwin died 17 January 1985; he was 106 years old.
