Gallery Copy: In 1856, William Sprague, Sr., of Cranston, Rhode Island, began what he described as "the largest mill on the Western Continent" in a rural part of eastern Connecticut, only to die later that year. Construction of the Baltic Cotton Mill was continued by his sons, A. & W. Sprague, and in 1861, the area was incorporated as the town of Sprague, with the mill village of Baltic in its southwest corner. This map prominently features the Providence, Hartford & Fishkill Railroad, which provided easy access to Providence for these Rhode Island mill owners. The "public highway" that runs along Baltic Pond is modern Route 97.
Description: Map of the part of the Sprague family estate east of Baltic Pond, in Sprague, Connecticut, where the Baltic Cotton Mill was established. The map shows the boundary lines of four parcels of land, plus part of two more. The barn, farm house and agent's house are depicted with perimeter measurements. Between the pond and the two largest parcels of land is the Providence, Hartford and Fishkill Railroad, with its station located near the intersection of the public highway on the right side of the map. The scale marker is decorative, with leafy embellishments.
Cartographic Note: Scale: 1 inch equals 100 feet
