Subject Note: The historian and diplomat George Bancroft was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1800 and died in Washington, D.C. in 1891. Clementine Welling was the wife of Dr. James C. Welling. The Wellings lived at 159 Farmington Avenue, Hartford.
Inscription: On verso: "To his dear & honored Friend, Mrs. Clementina Welling /Geo. Bancroft / January 1888."
