Description: Men in zouave uniforms fight on foot against a troop of mounted cavalry in blue military uniforms. One of the zouaves holds an American flag. Others hold or fire rifles with fixed bayonets. One man holds a knife. The cavalrymen wield swords or sabers. A horse collapses at the left. Men, apparently dead or wounded, are on the ground. Trees are at the left and right. The background is largely hidden by clouds of smoke.
Inscription: On recto, lithographed title beneath image, "BATTLE OF BULL'S RUN, VA., JULY 21. 1861. / Desperate conflict between the New York Fire Zouaves and the Rebel Black Horse Cavalry, in which the gallant Zouaves heroically distinguished / themselves, completely routing and nearly exterminating that famous Cavalry. [leaf ornament]" On verso, in pencil: upper left, "Print / Box [blank] / #22"; lower right, "consv CPC 1987 / Dwr 26". In red ink, "903".
