Description: A full-length standing portrait of an elderly African American man wearing a coat, vest, shirt, necktie, trousers, and shoes. A thin chain, probably a watch chain, extends across his vest. In his right hand he holds a long rope, probably attached to a bell, which extends from above. In his left hand he holds two keys. A broom rests in the crook of his arm. A wooden bucket is on the floor behind him.
Technique Note: This print is a rare early example of a tinted lithograph by the Kellogg brothers. It was printed from two stones, one for the black design and another for the tan background. (Finlay, 10/21/2003) Source Note: After a daguerreotype by Roberts, possibly William S. Roberts, who is listed in the Hartford City Directory in 1850-1855.
Inscription: On recto, lithographed title beneath image, "'PROF. JIM.' / JANITOR OF TRIN. COLL." On verso, in pencil: center, "Dwr 7"; lower right, accession number.
