Description: A black African man and woman are seated on a lion skin beneath a palm tree. The woman wears a turban, a collar, a short skirt, and jewelry, including drop earrings, necklaces, and a bracelet on her ankle. She holds an infant who reaches for a bunch of grapes held by a small child behind her. A basket of eggs is nearby. The man wears a skirt or loincloth and has a fur wrapped around his shoulders. He also wears jewelry, including earrings, a necklace, and ankle bracelets. He holds a bow. A bundle of arrows and a spear are nearby. Another man and woman wearing similar clothing are dancing at the right. All the people are barefoot. In the background are a river, a volcano, and a few scattered trees and plants. At the left, a man threatens a lioness or tiger with a spear. At the right, a man rides an elephant while an another man walks nearby.
Subject Note: Roger Genser has a print entitled "America." published by E.B. & E.C. Kellogg, Kelloggs & Thayer, & D. Needham, which appears to belong to the same series as this print. The existence of the two prints, one published by E.B. & E.C. Kellogg and the other published by D.W. Kellogg & Co. suggests that the pair (presumably part of a series representing the Four Continents) were issued at least twice. (Finlay 5/31/2005)
