Description: View of a three-story stone or brick prison building with a cupola. Smoke issues from the chimneys of a wing or separate building at the right. A one-story porch and a high wall connect the wings or buildings. A board fence is at the right, and a rail fence is in the right background. A picket fence is in the foreground and at the left. Posts, probably hitching posts, are in the foreground between two dirt paths or drives leading towards the building. A wagon drawn by two horses is on the drive at the right. A man and a woman walk on the path at the left. Another man stands in the open doorway ahead of them. Young trees are regularly spaced in the grassy lawn. A stagecoach drawn by four horses is on the dirt road in the left foreground. A cow grazes nearby. Birds fly in the sky in the left background.
Inscription: On recto, lithographed title beneath image, "CONNECTICUT STATE PRISON." In pencil, lower right, "19 1/2 x 23 3/4 12 3/4 x 12 7/8" "Dwr 23". On verso, in pencil, lower center: accession number.
